NeoGen Project – One year later

Has recently ended the pilot stage of NEOGEN PROJECT which has involved approximately 4 thousand newborns in Regina Margherita Children’s Hospital.

This innovative neonatal screening offered to newborns’ families – in parallel with the routine neonatal screening – allows the early diagnosis of approximately 500 pediatric diseases, identifiable through a genetic test: the Exome sequencing test. Diseases’ identification and therapies’ early start have a predicted benefit on the clinical disease evolution and on young patients’ lives.

The project, supported by Compagnia di San Paolo Foundation (https://www.compagniadisanpaolo.it/en/) and by Maria Teresa Lavazza Foundation, (https://www.fondazionemariateresalavazza.org/) had been coordinated by Prof. Franca Fagioli (Director of the Department of Pathology and Child Care at the Regina Margherita Children’s Hospital) and has been conducted in cooperation with the Italian Institute for Genomic Medicine (https://www.iigm.it/?lang=en).
